Ireland Facts - Parliament of Ireland
Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (the House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate),whose powers and functions derive from the constitution enacted by the People on 1 July 1937. Each House of the Oireachtas has power under its Standing Orders to form Committees for specific purposes. The first meeting of Dáil Éireann took place in the MansionHouse, the residence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, on the afternoon of 21 Jan.1919. The meeting lasted a mere two hours. They were two of the most momentous hours in Ireland’s history. During this brief period the Dáil adopted a Constitution and approved the Declaration of Independence. By doing so the Dáil asserted a continuity of objectives with the leaders of the 1916 Rising in setting up a separate parliament, government and republic. The current president of Ireland (2007) is Mary McAleese currently serving her second and last term. The role of the Irish president is mainly a figurehead although the president does have the power to send legislation to the Supreme Court for judgement on it's constitutionality. The parliamentary leader of the country is known as An Taoiseach ( pronounced - on tee-shock ) Taoiseach is Irish for chief or leader.
