famous Irish people 2, the list of famous Irish people continued

Famous Irish people 2 is the second part of facts on a list of famous Irish writers. As stated in the first part this list is subjective , it is only my personal choice, Although I do think that the authors included here would go very close to making it into any who's who of famous Irish people never mind famous Irish authors.

John Banville - 1945

Long Lankin 1970

Dr. Copernicus 1976

Kepler 1981

The Book of Evidence 1989

The Untouchables 1997

The Sea 2005

County Wexford man Banville previously worked for Aer Lingus and then as a journalist in Dublin. Dr. Copernicus won Banville the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Book of Evidence won him the G.P.A. Book Award and he also won the Man-Booker Prize for his novel The Sea. Defined by those really in the know, and that does not include me for I am certainly not qualified to be a critic, as a master prose novelist some of Banville's work has also been adapted for television and cinema.

Sean O'Casey 1880-1964

Shadow of a Gunman 1923

Juno and the Paycock 1924

The Plough and the Stars 1926

Purple Dust 1940

The Drums of Father Ned 1959

From a working class Dublin background O'Casey did not learn to write until he was in his early teens. He was a republican socialist and served as the secretary of the Citizen Army.

The Plough and The Stars which was set in the highly emotive subject of 1916 sparked huge riots on the streets of Dublin after it was performed at the Abbey Theatre. O'Caseys next play The Silver Tassie was rejected by the Abbey Theatre and further convinced O'Casey that his decision to leave Ireland after the previous furore was indeed the correct one. His later plays were a mix of comic ,experimental and fantastic. His six volumes of autobiography are unflinching in their honesty.

James Joyce 1882 - 1941

Dubliners 1914

A Portrait of the Artist 1916

Ulysses 1922

Finnegans Wake 1939

Jesuit educated at Clongowes and belvedere Joyce moved to Paris in 1902. He subsequently spent most of his life in France , Italy and Switzerland.

His most famous work,Ulysses, describes one day in the life of a Dublin Jew,Leopold Bloom and his wife Molly along with Stephen Dedalus who was based on Joyce himself.

Joyce married Nora Barnacle in 1923. He died in Paris. Bloomsday is commemorated in Ireland on June 16th.

Joyce would certainly be considered by many to be one of the most famous Irish people of all time.

Samuel Beckett 1906 - 1989

Plays

Waiting for Godot 1949

Endgame 1957

Krapp's Last Tape 1958

Happy Days 1960

Novels

Murphy 1938

Molloy 1948

Malone Dies 1948

Unnameable 1950

Beckett was born in Dublin and completed his education at Trinity College. He moved to France in 1936. During WW2 Beckett worked for the French Resistance. It is said that most of his best work was written in French first and then translated into English. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. He died in Paris.

famous Irish people, the final 2 of the writers

Jonathan Swift 1667 - 1745

Gulliver's Travels 1697

A Tale of a Tub 1704

Dublin born Swift finished his education in Trinity College and was ordained into the Church of Ireland in 1695. Thought by many to be the greatest prose satirist in the English language his most well famous book,Gulliver's Travels. a childrens favourite was in fact intende for adults. He once stated that he thought Ireland 'the most miserable country upon earth'. Certainly a novel approach to getting on the list of famous Irish people. Nonetheless he was very fondly regarde. Apparently he died 'mad' and left much of his estate for the establishment of St.Patrick's Hospital which incidentally still treats mental illness.

William Butler Yeats - 1865 - 1939

The Wanderings of Oisin 1889

The Celtic Twilight 1893

The Wind Among the Reeds 1899

Cathleen Ni Houlihan 1902

The Wild Swans at Coole 1919

Collected Poems 1956

A Dubliner with strong Sligo connections his family background was extraordinary . Both his father John B Yeats and his brother Jack B Yeats were gifted and highly influential painters.

Yeats is not just another famous Irish person but is the greatest poet of the 20th century. Yeats was also a senator and also founded the Abbey Theatre. Yeats was awarded the Nobel prize in 1923. He died in France but is buried in Drumcliff Churchyard in Sligo.
